Stockholm spans two historical Swedish provinces. The larger part of the city — including Gamla stan (the Old Town), Norrmalm, Östermalm and all northern districts — lies in the province of Uppland. South of Slussen, meaning Södermalm and the southern districts, lies in the province of Södermanland. The boundary roughly follows the water between Riddarfjärden and Saltsjön.
This means a walk from Gamla stan to Södermalm is technically a journey between two provinces. Stockholm is one of few Swedish cities that straddles a provincial border, reflecting its historical role as a meeting point between the Svealand regions.
Stockholm lies primarily in the province of Uppland, but its southern parts (Södermalm and southward) are in Södermanland. The provincial boundary runs through the city centre.
